| Description |
Eastern Lights (EL) is a pioneer project for the development of a large-scale CCUS cluster in Eastern Europe. It is an EU funded research project that aims to demonstrate how CO₂ can be captured, transported, and permanently stored underground in North West Bulgaria. The project will establish a full CO₂ transport and storage value chain, making use of saline aquifers which are located near major CO₂ sources and pipeline infrastructure. The Holcim Bulgaria plant will be the heart and engine of the cluster development and the demonstration site for storage. Extensive geological, geophysical and testing work will be done to address critical issues as induced seismicity and safe injection over time. In this context, SEMEX EngCon and Q-Con are operating a network of five stations (SEMEX EngCon MEHNIR) sampling with 100 Hz in the study area on behalf of Fraunhofer IEG. This network is used to measure natural seismicity and, at the same time, to monitor drilling and testing activities. |
