FDSN code 9R (2025-2026) Network name DEGLASEIS - NE Greenland Deglaciation Seismology (DEGLASEIS)
Start year 2025 Operated by

End year 2026 Deployment region -
Description

DEGLASEIS is a temporary amphibian seismic network in the NE Greenland region with the following objectives:

•Understand the relation of seismicity to NE Greenland deglaciation processes based on a lowered detection threshold and an improved characterization of seismic sources including location, focal depth and mechanism of seismic events
•Characterize seasonal changes in the stress state of the sea ice cover surrounding NE Greenland based on records of ambient seismic noise.
•Improve the understanding of the active plate boundary in Lena Trough

The seismic network consists of seven ice-going ocean bottom and five land seismic stations to monitor continuously seismicity and ambient seismic noise for a period of 12 months. Four ocean bottom stations are spaced by about 50 km in deepest locations at Lena Trough between 81°N and 82°N, and another three ocean bottom stations are located north of 82°N on the narrow Wandel Sea shelf off NE Greenland. Three land seismic stations were installed by helicopter from board R/V Polarstern close to the coast between 79°N and 80°N and two stations at about 83°N. Some of the land sites are co-located with geodetic station sites, where time series of vertical movements are available.

The project is a cooperation between AWI Bremerhaven, Germany, and GEUS Copenhagen, Denmark.
