FDSN Network Information

FDSN code 6Z (2022-2022) Network name Larsen C Ice Shelf Rift Tip Array
Start year 2022 Operated by
  • British Antarctic Survey (BAS), United Kingdom
End year 2022 Deployment region -
Description

An array of 1C and 3C sensors was deployed around the tip of a rift at the southern end of Larsen C Ice Shelf. Three 3C Reftek RT130s with 4.5Hz geophones and 29 x 1C Sercel Wing accelerometers were deployed for 17 days. The southern rifts on Larsen C stagnate in a suture zone formed downstream of the Joerg Peninsula. The study was aimed at investigating ice and fracture properties to understand this stagnation and how the suture zones bind ice shelves.
