| Description |
In the framework of the Agence Nationale de Recherche project CAST (Caribbean Active SeismoTectonics, 2023-2028), Geo-Ocean, Géoazur, and the Université d'État d'Haïti temporarily deployed a passive monitoring network in the Caribbean Sea offshore Western Hispaniola to record earthquake and tremor activity between July 2024 and February 2026. The goal of this experiment is to characterize the present-day fault motion (slow vs. fast) in the North Caribbean. The Caribbean Plate moves ~20 mm/yr relative to the North American Plate, and this slip is partitioned between 'twin' strike-slip faults: the Septentrional-Oriente Fault to the north and the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault in the South. Ifremer and Géoazur deployed several broadband ocean-bottom seismometers in the Windward Passage and Jamaica Passage to complement the existing land networks of Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti.
