Description

In this project, the seismic nodes will be used to perform a 3D active source seismic imaging of a mountain watershed. The purpose of this project is to obtain the subsurface critical zone structure of a catchment from the velocity model, which is important for hydrologic modeling and hydraulic partitioning analysis. In the project, we will deploy the nodes on the ground surface in grids, and an active source (sledgehammer) will be used to create the seismic wave. The shot locations and the nodes will be changed to cover the entire catchment. At Boise State, we have a GPS-synchronized system to record shot location and time automatically. After the active source imaging is done, we will leave the sensors in the catchment for about a week to monitor the groundwater change with ambient noise signals. This groundwater level data will be compared with our hydrologic modeling results. This project is part of my NSF Career grant, which quantifies the effect of elevation on hydrologic partitioning in the watershed. The key to this NSF grant is to know the subsurface structure, which can only be obtained from geophysical imaging in the field for such a large-scale application.
