Description

Seismic data recorded in association with the U.S. NSF-funded West Greenland Moulins project, on the Greenland Ice Sheet, within Sermeq Avannarleq (NSF Awards 1604022 and 1603835). The purpose of the project was to better understand the role of water flowing into moulins on the ice sheet surface in governing the motion of the Greenland Ice Sheet. In 2008, 8 seismometers were maintained within the ice sheet ablation area between April and October in order to track glaciohydraulic tremor produced by subglacial water flow, as well as seismic signals associated with the response of the ice sheet to that water flow. Our network consisted of two types of stations: 1) Geobit SRi32L digitizers connected to C100 seismometers with nominally flat frequency response between 10 s and 98 Hz, and 2) Nanometrics Centaur digitizers connected to Trillium Compact Posthole seismometers, with 20 s corner period. Sensors were installed below the snow-ice interface, 1.2 - 2.5 m deep in augered holes and connected to lead acid batteries powered by solar panels.
