FDSN Network Information

FDSN code 5D (2021-2025) Network name Mikroseismisches Kandel Elztal Experiment (MiKaEl-Ex)
Start year 2021 Operated by
End year 2025 Deployment region -
Description

The aim of the microseismic Kandel-Elztal experiment (MiKaEl-Ex) is to continuously record the micro-earthquakes with a highly sensitive measuring network. From this measurement data, the micro-earthquake signals will then be identified from the background noise using innovative methods based on artificial intelligence. Then the arrival time of the earthquakes waves are used to calculate the exact location of their sources in the interior of the earth. In this way, potential active faults are found and localized.
MiKaEl-Ex is a joint project of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Geophysical Institute), the Rhenish-Westphalian Technical University of Aachen and the Baden-Württemberg State Earthquake Service in Freiburg. The field work is supported on site by the municipalities and is supported by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and Art.
It includes one broad-band sensor STS-2, four short 1s period Lennartz sensors and three short 4.5s period Geophone sensors.
