| Description | CODAS is a hybrid seismic network deployed during September 2026 (one month) across the subduction zone of northern Chile, at about 20.8°S, at the latitude of Patache, Tarapacá region. It combines a Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) system with two broadband seismometers. The DAS is installed on an existing East-West optical fibre owned by Minera Collahuasi, which extends from the coast to the Cordillera of the Andes. The experiment was conducted in collaboration with Collahuasi. The DAS data were acquired on the first 70 km of the fibre, with a Sintela interrogator, with a 10 m channel spacing and a 20 m gauge length, recorded at 100 Hz. The shared dataset is spatially decimated to one channel every 150 m. The two MBB2 seismometers record at 200 Hz and are located on either side of the fibre. They complement the Chilean National Seismological Network (C and C1) and the IPOC regional network (CX), and help constrain hypocentre locations. The objective of the experiment is to obtain a clear picture of the seismicity of the plate interface (thrust), detect and map the local shallow active crustal faults of the coastal region, and determine with great precision the seismic patterns that caraterize the slab at this latitude. |
