Geology: SCHQ is located on competent Pre-Cambrian slate and shale.
Vault Conditions: Reinforced concrete vault rock-bolted to surface exposure of bedrock and backfilled with overburden to the lid.
Site Description: SCHQ is located within the Eastern Background seismic zone, in which low-level but occasionally significant seismicity may occur. The region is seismically quiet in all directions from the station for greater than 300 km. The Lower St Lawrence seismic zone is about 450 km due south of SCHQ; the Boothia-Ungava seismic zone is approximately 600km to the northeast. Mine blasts from mines around Labrador City about 100 km to the south are recorded at SCHQ several times each week. The blasts take place around 15-16h. UT and normally range from 2 < MN < 3.
