FDSN code XV (1993-1996) Network name ICEMELT Broadband Seismometer Experiment (ICEMELT)
Start year 1993 Operated by
End year 1996 Deployment region -
Description

The ICEMELT broadband Seismometer Experiment was designed to determine the upper mantle structure beneath Iceland, a volcanic island created by a hot spot located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This seismic network spanned the entire island with an average station spacing of about 100 km. Each station was equipped with a 16-bit Reftek RT72A-06 data logger, a GPS timing system, and a Streckeisen STS-2 seismometer. Data was recorded continuously at 10 Hz and additionally at 50 Hz for limited time spans such as triggered events. Event-based data was archived in 1998 at the IRIS DMC as assembled dataset 98-007. This dataset aims to supplement that older dataset with continuous data converted into MiniSEED format. The included data was recovered from original field tapes and backup tapes that were stored at Carnegie Science.
