Description

The Western Ionian Sea Network is a broadband seismological network with
sensors deployed in deepsea (about 2000m depth) of the central Mediterranean
basin. The network aim is to monitor the high seismicity of the area and the
largest active volcano in the European continent, Etna Volcano.
Moreover the network has the scope to investigate the effectiveness of
seismometers deployed in and close to repeaters housing of a traditional
telecommunications cable (SMART cable). The network is operated by the
National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (Italian: Istituto Nazionale
di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, INGV).
