FDSN Network Information

FDSN code 3B (2015-2016) Network name Integrated Geosciences in the Merida Andes, Venezuela (GIAME Seismic Reflection Profile)
Start year 2015 Operated by
End year 2016 Deployment region
Description

The Andean orogen is one of the most important structures in the geological context of Venezuela. Therefore, we propose this research project, which aims to generate a lithosphere scale model, and the development of a temporary dynamic model for the Merida Andes. In order to fulfill these objectives, we propose a set of primary tasks, which are composed by multidisciplinary activities executed by different research groups pertaining to the Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (FUNVISIS), University of Los Andes (ULA), Central University of Venezuela (UCV) and Venezuelan Petroleum State Company (PDVSA)
As a base for the lithospheric investigations of the Andes three seismic wide-angle profiles crossing the orogen at three representative sites, in order to determine the internal structure and the relation to the gravimetric root of the orogen. The seismic wide angle studies, done in 2014, will be complemented by seismic reflection measurements along the southernmost profile across the Andes.
As one of the main objectives is contribute to the determination of the seismic hazard in the region, the densification of the local seismological network will be done by means of 10 seismological stations, which will be integrated into the local network at ULA university. This will allow developing detailed studies of focal mechanisms and surface wave inversion, which, together with the detailed evaluation of the historic seismicity and neotectonic and paleoseismic investigations, will benefit the update in knowledge of the regional seismic hazard.
